Insurance Insitute for Busiiness and Home Safety
Company Overview
ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION AND HISTORY
IBHS is an independent, Non-profit, applied scientific research and communications organization funded by property insurers and re-insurers. The Institute is dedicated to reducing property losses due to natural and man-made disasters by building stronger, more resilient communities.
The research facility is a very tangible, very public demonstration of the property insurance industry's deep commitment to reducing and preventing losses that disrupt the lives of millions of home and business owners each year.
IBHS is headquartered in Tampa, Florida. Our Research Center is located in Richburg, Chester County, South Carolina.
Our Research Center is a unique, state-of-the-art, multi peril training facility on a 90 acre parcel of land. This facility will significantly advance building science by enabling researchers to more fully and accurately evaluate various residential and commercial construction materials and systems.
IBHS' scientific research will influence residential and commercial structural design and construction for decades to come. Resulting in savings on natural disaster-related losses - which total over $25 billion across the U.S. in 2008 alone, and are expected to double every decade- will "pay for" the facility many times over.
Company History
IBHS was formed by the property-casualty insurance industry to help coordinate emerging property insurance plans in 1979 under the name of National Committee on Property Insurance (NCPI). As the ‘70s and ‘80s unfolded, new problems and issues related to natural hazards (e.g.,, earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, severe windstorms, and wildfires) arose; in response, NCPI quickly created a Windstorm and Coastal Issues Committee, and the Board of Directors created the Insurance Institute for Property Loss Reduction (IIPLR).
IIPLR provided the industry with information on building codes, effective land use controls, new building designs and retrofit applications. In 1997, the IIPLR board voted to change the organization’s name again – to the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety – in order to be consistent with its revised mission.
